As a company of scientists, IonOptix develops innovative research solutions for high-speed quantitative fluorescence, muscle mechanics and tissue engineering. The company's goal is to produce the best systems at a price that is affordable for the individual researcher.
IonOptix Corporation was founded in 1990 by Dr. Douglas Tillotson to develop, manufacture and sell complete systems for quantifying cellular ion levels using fluorescent indicators. In 1992, Douglas began a professional collaboration with a leading Boston cardiology laboratory whose cardiac research primarily involved studying the entire organ. As part of this collaboration, a system was developed to simultaneously record calcium levels and cell length of a single cardiac myocyte (obtained by digitizing the output of an analog edge detector). Development of the software-based edge detection system began in 1995, and its sales to the cardiac research community now account for more than 3/4 of IonOptix's business.
In 1998, IonOptix Corporation received grant support from the NIH SBIR program to develop new equipment for recording cardiac contractility. Real-time recording of sarcomere length was the result of these efforts, as well as numerous other advances, including the development of the MyoPacer, an autonomous field stimulator for myocytes in a cell chamber mounted under a microscope. Further developments in recent years include faster CCD cameras, the C-Pace system to prevent dedifferentiation in cultured cells, and advances in software control and analysis.
In 2008, IonOptix Corporation formed IonOptix LLC in the United States and IonOptix Limited in Europe with Red Box Direct Ltd. as part of a plan to expand business and provide better customer support in the field. In 2015, Douglas stepped down as CEO and was taken over by Tom Udaile. Later that year, the company moved to new headquarters in Westwood, Massachusetts, expanding its staff to include additional application support staff. In late 2015, IonOptix CEO Michel Helmes created CytoCypher BV in the Netherlands to collaborate with IonOptix to begin developing a more productive version of the core calcium and contractility detection system. Later, in late 2018, CytoCypher merged with IonOptix. During this same time period, IonOptix received NIH SBIR Phase I and II grants to commercialize this higher throughput system in April 2017 and April 2019, respectively.
Another groundbreaking development by IonOptix was the MultiCell HTS system, an automated solution for identifying and quantifying the mechanical phenotype of hundreds of myocytes per hour.
As of 2019, IonOptix had more than 30 employees, serving more than 500 preclinical laboratories worldwide from offices in North America, Europe and Asia. Today, the firm's goal is to empower clients to make significant scientific discoveries by developing innovative tools and providing world-class support.
