The McIlwain Tissue Chopper is designed to slice fresh and fixed tissue for use in metabolic experiments. Cutting in layers, cubes and prisms is possible. The maximum cutting thickness is 1 mm.
The McIlwain Tissue Chopper TC752 is specifically suited for small and irregular biopsy samples or samples from small organs. It was created to prepare tissue samples for metabolic research. For neuroscience, it presents the chance for quick cutting of tissue like the hippocampus, which is rather flat and won't be severely damaged by stress.
Moreover, the McIlwain can be used to cut organotypic slices and prepare tissue for immunological research. Campden vibrating microtomes offer more accurate and gentle slice sectioning for cortical or sub-cortical regions. Young animal's brain cell cultures can be prepared using the tissue chopper.
Its operation makes it considerably less likely to damage cell structure than a blender or homogenizer would, and it may be used on pieces that would be challenging to cut using conventional techniques. Applications for the liver, kidney, and various sections of the central nervous system are typical. Prism samples and slices with a thickness of 1 mm can be created in 30 seconds. By using an indexing clutch and a micrometer head calibrated in microns, the Chopper provides stepless change of slice thickness from zero to maximum.
The specimen is set down on the circular stainless steel table, which automatically moves from left to right at a variable pace. The chopping arm with the blade is lifted and lowered during this movement at up to 200 strokes per minute. The specimen is cut into the necessary slices as the table containing it passes beneath the blade. If prism-shaped pieces are needed, the table is moved back to the machine's left side, rotated by 45 degrees, and the operation is repeated. The table is turned 90 degrees for the second chop to prepare cubes. A quick return mechanism is installed for the return of the table, and a safety limit switch is included to avoid machine overrunning.
Modification The TC752-PD permits the use of a typical 60 mm petri dish in place of the cutting disc. The unit includes two sample blades.
