MM-100 - Oxygen Consumption System

The MM-100 metabolic monitor automatically measures oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide excretion in small animals.

Features:

  • Small animal metabolic and calorimetric measurements
  • Employs precise and reliable O2, CO2, flow, temperature, and pressure sensors
  • Contains MM-Comm software for thorough measurement plotting and logging
  • There are up to 16 animal expansion units available
  • Measuring chambers for rodents the size of mice and rats are available

The MM-100 Metabolic Monitor System employs an open circuit method to monitor the oxygen consumption (VO2) and CO2 generation (VCO2) of tiny animals. The animal is put in a room that is closed off and has a regular supply of fresh air flowing through it. At the chamber's input and outflow, the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide are monitored. The computation of oxygen consumption, CO2 production, respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and heat production is made possible by the three major measures of flow, O2, and CO2. Temperature and pressure adjustments are made to gas readings.

Simple Setup and Operation

The animal is put in the chamber and given time to adjust. All gas, flow, and other measurements are transferred to the associated computer running the MM-Comm software and shown on the front panel LCD display screen. Plots show the calculated data for CO2 production, O2 consumption, and other derived measurements. Simple ASCII files can be used to log data for later study. Standardization against room air is constantly carried out at regular intervals, ensuring that the system's accuracy is preserved throughout extended periods of monitoring.

MM-Comm Monitoring Software

The MM-100 equipment comes with WindowsTM software for showing and logging the metabolic data graphically. The data panel offered by this software displays all of the most recent raw and calculated measurements. For direct importation into a spreadsheet or other analytic application, data is logged in a straightforward ASCII format. The animal number and the measurement time are noted on each record.

Single and Multiple Chamber Systems

Everything required to monitor one animal is included in a simple MM-100 system. One host MM-100 unit can accommodate up to 16 animals via expansion units. For 2, 8, or 16 animals, they are the MMX-2, MMX-8, and MMX-16 Expanders, respectively. Gas sampling and measurement are carried out sequentially from one chamber to the next when expansion units are in operation. As a result, a precise, affordable system for testing a large number of animals for these crucial physiological characteristics is established.
