Lambda LS

Stand-Alone Xenon Arc Lamp and Power Supply Lambda LS

Xenon illumination system for microscopes, used with a liquid light guide and standard filter wheel. Connects to any microscope.

The Lambda LS is a self-contained illuminator that includes a xenon arc lamp, lamp housing, cold mirror, and power supply in one unit. The Lambda LS is made to work in conjunction with a liquid light guide that sends astonishingly flat, strong lighting to the optical train of the user's microscope or other apparatus. A typical Sutter Instrument filter wheel fits into the lamp's cabinet and is easily moved into and out of a slot in the light stream. A second filter wheel can be put outside the cabinet if preferred. The light guide output is compliant with the majority of standard microscope systems when utilized with the proper adapters.

The 175W xenon bulb is pre-aligned using a parabolic mirror, unlike the arc lamps utilized by the majority of fluorescence microscopes, and does not need alignment, focusing, or collimation. The Lambda LS bulb may emit light between 330 nm to a cutoff of 650 nm that is determined by the cold mirror in the standard configuration. The output of an optional improved UV lamp is substantially lower into the UV (cut off near 200 nm). The optional bulb, like all UV light sources, produces a substantial amount of ozone and needs to be utilized in a well-ventilated area.

A single enclosure houses the power supply, lamp house, arc light, and cold mirror in the Lambda LS's compact form. By using a distant power source, this solution resolves a major problem with typical arc lamp designs. When long high-tension lines age, their insulating properties deteriorate, making it harder to light the lamp. The power supply has been made to reduce electrical noise that can be detected by physiological recording equipment, as is the case with all of Sutter equipment.

The illumination port of the majority of microscopes can be connected to the liquid light guide using an adapter, which can be bought individually. For more details, please see the Microscope Adapters page. With different cold mirror and light guiding configurations, increased output ranges are conceivable.
