Holders and Headstages by Axon

Preamplifier heads for patch-clamp amplifiers and various applications: extracellular registration, bath potential measurements, ion-selective measurements, ionophoresis and intracellular registration, bath potential fixation, etc.

At the moment, only Teflon-insulated U-types are available, and they can only be used with HL-U holders and U-type adapters.

It is necessary to order each adapter and holder separately.

HS-2 and HS-2A headstages

These headstages are to be used with GeneClamp and AxoClamp. They are suitable for a variety of applications, including extracellular registration, bath potential measurements, ion-selective measurements, ionophoresis, and intracellular registration on small and large cells. Single voltage amplifiers with variable current amplification make up both headstages. The headstages have circuitry that stops current leakage through the capacitance compensation circuitry for ultra-high impedance electrodes.

Standard headstage options:

  • HS-2A-x100MGU
  • HS-2A-x1LU
  • HS-2A-x10MGU
  • HS-2A-x0.1LU
  • HS-2A-x1MGU
  • HS-2-x0.01MU
  • HS-2-x0.0001MU

"M" stands for extended capacitance compensation range.

"G" stands for grounded enclosure.

"A" stands for extended operating voltage range of ±150 V.

HS-4-x1MGU single-amplifier-relay switching headstage

When it is required to maximize electrode voltage with two-electrode potential clamping, this headstage is used in conjunction with Axoclamp. It operates similarly to HS-2 in all other modes. The headstage can only be amplified with a single current (x1MG). The VG-2 headstage is used to measure current.

VG-2 is a virtual earth/ground probe headstage

It can be used in place of or in addition to the Axoclamp to gauge the total bath current. The common gradients are 0.1, 1, and 10. Another gain option is the x100 gain. These headstages' current ranges are 0.1 µA (x0.1), 1 µA (x1), 10 µA (x10), and 100 µA (x100).

VG-2A-x100 bath potential probe headstage

To get a zero potential for the bath, use this along with the Axoclamp or GeneClamp. By doing so, the influence of the bath earthing electrode and the solution's series resistance is eliminated. Reduced solution composition and temperature variations also lessen the impact of gradual potential drift.

Additional CV-5 headstages for GeneClamp 500B

  • CV-5-100GU patch-clamp headstagestage (100 mV/pA)
  • CV-5B-100GU bilayer patch-clamp headstagestage (100mV/pA)
  • CV-5-1GU macro-patch headstagestage (1 mV/pA)
  • CV-5-100MU voltammetry headstagestage (100 mV/nA)

These headstages are only compatible with GeneClamp 500B. One feedback resistor, which transforms current to voltage, is present in each headstage. The designations 100G, 1G and 100M are 100GΩ, 1GΩ and 100MΩ resistors. An expanded capacitance compensation range, such as for two layers, is available in the "B" version. For macropatch, 1G is adequate. On carbon microelectrodes, cyclic voltammetry is carried out at 100M.

EX-1 1.5 m extension cable

Connects to HS-2, HS-2A, HS-4, VG-2 and VG-2A headstages.

Mechanical fasteners

The majority of headstages come with an insulated mounting rod that is 102mm long free of charge. You can order 6.3mm or 9.5mm, however 7.9mm is the standard. All headstages also come with an insulated mounting platform that can accommodate a variety of micromanipulators.

Holders

HL-U: For connection to U-headstages. (threaded connection)

HL-U for 1.0-1.7 mm glass

HLB-U BNC adapter

HLR-U corner adapter

The holder can clamp pipettes with an exterior diameter ranging from 1.0 to 1.7mm thanks to four sizes of conical washers. The 1mm tube is joined to the suction tube. The design is low noise and simple to use. Spare parts include five washers of each size, four pieces of 50mm silver wire, and an insulating tube of 70mm silicone. For connecting to the headstage, utilize the BNC connector.
