For individuals who need to maintain slices viable for longer, such as for electrophysiological field recordings, the 5100-Plus is ideal. Using the adjustable blade holder and "Opti-cal" Calibration device, the user can calibrate the Z-axis deflection of the blade to a tolerance of 2 µm. Less "chatter" and less damage to the slice surface result from less Z-axis deflection, which also increases the vitality of the cells on the slice surface.

The New 5100mz series Vibrating Microtome shares an interface with the high-end 7000smz-2, giving the user access to a variety of configurable parameters:

• Frequency of vibration: 50 to 80 Hz
• Adjustable amplitude between 0.5 and 1.5 millimeters
• Controlling the blade advance precisely (at least 0.1 mm/sec)
• Set the blade's start and stop positions
• Control box on the umbilical cord is excellent for use in a solitary setting

Employ the "Slice window" option, which automatically remembers the start and finish positions of the slice, or the fully manual method.
