What is CDOM?
Organic material with color that may be measured using the Liquid Waveguide Capillary Cell (LWCC) is known as Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM). Natural occurrences of CDOM are formed from organic tannins in water systems. The amount of CDOM varies depending on where samples are collected, with coastal areas having higher CDOM concentrations than open ocean waters. Moreover, open-ocean water depth affects CDOM absorption. LWCCs are fiber optic flow cells with modest sample volumes ranging from 2.4 μL to around 3 mL with an extended optical pathlength (1-500 cm).
Benefits
- Wider variety of absorbance measurements with improved dynamic range
- Increased measuring sensitivity
- Find solutes with lower concentrations
- Smaller sample volumes can be used to make measurements
- Small, transportable system for on-board real-time measuring on a ship
Applications
- Find out the biogeochemical cycles, such as the ocean's organic carbon cycle.
- Surface-water masses are tracked and mapped.
- Ascertain the following by measuring the ocean's UV light penetration:
- effects of the photosynthesis reaction on the phytoplankton population,
- impact on the ocean's food chains,
- the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere.
- Keep an eye on CDOM's light absorption in relation to heat storage and the melting of the sea ice.
